This curriculum strives to repair the educational ruins of our current public school system, and to reassure and reassert that the parents have the responsibility first for the education of their children. History is taught chronologically while at the same time integrating biblically recorded history. The best references available are used for the topics discussed on weekly cards.

A Beka starts with the clear teaching of the Bible as the foundation for all other learning. With the Bible first in all its subject matter an emphasis is placed on structure, rules, analysis, and practice that is aimed at mastery.

This curriculum is founded with the goal of reaching students with different learning abilities. It provides students a solid skills foundation from which to build advanced writing and speaking skills. Students develop a tremendous sense of security and self-confidence in their English abilities. Children learn easily at a level far beyond “normal curriculum” requirements. Shurley uses repetition to attain mastery, provides tools for writing excellence, and promotes higher order thinking skills.

Two elements make Saxon unique: clear instruction and a distributed approach to instructions, practice and assessment. Researchers have confirmed that plain instruction is a critical element of student learning and that it is more effective than non-explicit instruction in teaching mathematics. It has also been determined that it is the most effective way to teach critical thinking skills. This open instruction activates prior knowledge, incorporates teacher models, provides both guided and independent practice, ensures teacher-student interaction, and includes frequent instructional checkpoints. Saxon recognizes that smaller pieces of information are easier to learn.

LITERATURE Several historical and literary classics are read over the course of the year. Children are challenged and succeed. Teachers are delighted when students cannot wait to ‘get to the next chapter.’
